BABY
BOOKS:
Baby
books are important in your child's development. Research shows that
children who are read to from babyhood are better at school and learn
to read more easily than their classmates who haven't had the same early
experiences. So choosing books for babies is an important task. Look
for baby books with simple pictures with bright colors and unfussy backgrounds
(plain white is good) and rhyming text or simple stories which are fun
to read aloud. If you are just starting your baby's book shelf, it's
important to remember that the act of reading is just as meaningful
as whatever baby books you choose. In addition to the warmth of a comfortable
lap and the sound of a favorite voice, certain visuals and text hold
the attention of newborns:

Newborns' eyesight is a work in progress. In fact, they see best from
a distance of approximately one foot. So simple, bold imaged baby books
hold the most appeal. Look for patterns (stripes, polka dots, checkers)
and black-and-white illustrations or photos, with minimal text or even
no words at all.
Babies also love to look at the human face. Two baby books to try are
Baby Faces: Smile! and Baby Faces: Peek-a-Boo!, both of which feature
visually stimulating photos of infants.
Board baby books are resistant to tiny fingers and durable enough to
be left with other toys for babies and toddlers to explore by themselves.
But there is no reason why you can't use regular books too, especially
if you give babies at the grabbing stage another toy to hold.
As
a parent, reading your baby books and playing your baby music, can be
a fun and easy way to increase baby development and help him or her
foster a love for literature, music and learning. Both can be incorporated
into a daily routine quite easily, by playing music throughout the day
and reading baby books before bed.
